First Day of Kindergarten

Self-reflections are important to develop growth in everyone. Within the first couple of weeks of school, these Kindergarten students reflected on what they already know and what they would like to learn by the end of the school year. This gives children the opportunity to set goals for themselves, improve on their skills and discover a passion for learning.

This bulletin board is the Kindergarten students' Inquiry Board. Each month my Mentor Teacher leads a new sort of investigation for student to explore. The first month of school was meant to highlight the students' self-awareness and projected goals and the teacher's tool for assessing their skills.

In a one-on-one work period with these three students, I was able to get a sense of the kind of academic, social, oral and language skills each child was entering the class with. From left to right; the first child displayed good fine motor skills and was able to write on their own, the second child was unresponsive to writing and describing their goals, and the third child could express their goal but needed to complete her writing with hand-over-hand support. It was interesting to see the different stages that each child was at and how important it is to recognize this so students are given accommodations when necessary.
