Nature Walk

Students went on a nature walk to collect leaves as part of our Fall Inquiry. I believe it is important for students to lead their own exploration and investigation in areas that interest them.

Students wondered about things they found in their community. One of their interesting findings included a tree root, which they believed may have been a dinosaur bone. I thought this was an interesting part of our inquiry because it connected the student's pre-existing knowledge of what a dinosaur bone might look like to infer that the tree roots look similar.

This activity integrated students' interests with cross-curricular expectations. Students brainstormed ideas about fall as a class as my mentor teacher recorded students' responses on chart paper. The class was also able to practice sorting methods, which were acquired in our Math Learning Centre. They sorted leaves based on colour, size, shape, and kind, which were recorded using a bar graph.
